Default essay question

i guess we all have to write essays in every country, specially in high school. do you follow any specific rules while writing an essay, or you just write whatever comes to your mind?

Hmm, its a good question.
In the 10th grade, we had to write a lot of essays because of teacher thought we sucked at it x).
I never realyl followed any rules (other than those basic essay rules). I wrote about what ever that was coming to my mind, but only about one subject often.
Kinda hard to explain really =/

By the way, I found this .doc about essay rules:

that site has some basic rules about writing essays.

to me, i think too many rules can harm your writing skills. you should write whatever comes to your mind first, then you can organize it. too many rules can limit your writing, often it happens.

Without stating the obvious, I think the beginning should really be impressive. May be a quote, which is brief, apt and to the point and also makes a deep impact. I keep adding a few quotes here and there in my essays, somehow gives them a more polished look, but only when they are very appropriate!

for quote, do you use direct references or indirect references? i think quote makes an essay complicated, it's only good to use if you can use it properly.

Well, when I was at high school I had to write essays by following any specific rules while writing it. I think the school have never let me just simply write whatever comes to my mind. And I think that's not good for our creativity

In my school there is a rule
1. use times new roman
2. send your essay to teacher's email
3. use 1,5 paragraph
4. use left margin 2,5 cm, right margin 1cm, up margin 2.5 cm, down margin 2cm

so complicated

i used to hate essay question, but then again it is the best way to see what do you think about certain subject or matter.

the problem is teachers using essay but they must judge that opinion with theirs, while opinion for one person is not for the other to force.

i just type whatever come out in my mind. With essay we have much imagination to answer the question. Compare to multiple choice, you just have 4 or 5 answer for each question.

i remember when i was still in university, there's one subject that i took, about social culture, in every test that the lecturer gave, always an essay test. but he never check our answers in the test, he just see how long is our answers and the longer we answer the better mark we got LOL my friend even write down a song lyrics in his test and the other made a story that not even connected at all with the question, but they got good marks since their answer was really long, isnt' it insane?but i like this kind of lecturer, i can get an easy A LOL
