Reena is twice as old as sunita.Three years ago , she was three times as old as sunita.How old is Reena now?
can anyone solve this problem.

let Reena be R and Sunita be S

Reena is twice as old as sunita -> R=2S
Three years ago , she was three times as old as sunita -> R-3 = 3(S-3) <-> R=3S - 6

3S-6 = 2S
S = 6
R = 2*6 =12

so the answer is 12

let the age of sunita = x
then, the age of ravina = 2x
three years ago,
ravina's age => 2x= 3(x-3)
2x= 3x-9
ans is 9

if you do it that way then it's the sunita answer coz from your equation 9 is the value of x and the x is sunita's age while the question is reena's age

@GemmaR: kalex 28 said that 3 years ago she was three times as old not twice

Our answer is the same but I use the ratio approach for this question.

3 years ago - R:S = 3:1 (Difference is 2 units)

Now - R:S = 2:1 (difference is 1 unit)

Since age difference is always the same, I multiply the ratio now by 2 to make the difference the same.

Now - R:S = 4:2 (difference is 2 unit)

As you can see, the ratio of R and S have each increased by 1 unit (from 3 years ago to Now)

This indicates 1 unit - 3 years.
Since R = 4 units, her age is 4X3=12.

gee, if u traced back your answer then 3 years ago, sunita is 9 and reena is 21 while it was said that reena's age is 3 times of sunita 3 years ago.. :hammer:
