Default Could you help me explain the grammar?

I just read a novel and there is a sentence like this in the novel

"without losing a single ship or a single battle, Japan has broken down the power of China, made a new Korea, enlarged her own territory..."

Look at the underlined word, why the author wrote "her" not "its"? Could you explain it?

I think it depends on what type is the novel.
based on your writing I guess the author wanted to say that japan is ungentlemanly ( I mean like female ) once again just my thought.

as far as I know... 'ship', 'country' and 'earth' are 'feminine noun' which means you have to call them 'she'

today's signature:

Got paid! Got paid! Got paid!

today's mood:

payment?!? wooow!!

How to know an object is a noun or not? In my dictionary there is no explanation whether an object is a feminine noun or not.

Countries are always referred to as ''she'' or ''her''. Im not sure why exactly, but I think its best just to accept it!
So are ships!

may be that why our country also known as "motherland" not "fatherland".. it's so feminine.
